Nigerian music sensation, Davido recently endorsed his uncle Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke who is running for the Governorship of Osun state. Undoubtedly, endorsing his uncle will further the Senator’s political ambition amongst the youths in Osun State. In a related development , Brazil’s football star Neymar has given his backing to former fellow international forward Romario in the upcoming gubernatorial elections next month
This is not the first time Neymar has expressed support for a politician, having backed center-right candidate Aecio Neves in the 2014 presidential elections. Romario, who helped Brazil lift the World Cup in 1994, is currently a Senator but is running for Governor of his native Rio de Janeiro in the upcoming October 7 elections.
The former Barcelona forward, having retired from his playing career, for the second time, in 2009, Romario was first elected a Rio deputy in 2010 and then became a senator in 2014. He now wants to govern Rio state, which is close to bankruptcy and has seen a wave of violence since hosting the 2016 Olympic Games. Having previously represented the center-right PSDB party, Romario is now standing for the centrist Podemos party. The latest opinion poll by Ibope consultancy a week ago gave Romario 20% of the vote, just behind center-right candidate Eduardo Paes, with 23.
Ibope’s poll released yesterday (September 10th) has democratic former mayor Paes, taking 23 percent of intended votes, with Romário taking twenty percent. With a three percent margin of error, the two candidates are in a statistical tie for voter intention. However, Paes’ supporters can take comfort in the fact that he appears to be rising in the polls as the election draws near. In Ibope’s previous poll in August, Romário, the candidate for the centrist Podemos party, led the poll by a slim margin taking fourteen percent of intended votes while Paes had twelve percent.
One month ago, Rio’s gubernatorial race looked to be a three-way heat with Anthony Garotinho of the Progressive Republican Party equaling Paes with twelve percent of voter intentions. But, with accusations of corruption against the former Rio governor recently upheld in Rio de Janeiro’s federal court (TRF2), Garotinho could be prohibited from contesting the October elections. Garotinho has denied the allegations and is appealing the case. However, the damage may have already been done. In yesterday’s Ibope poll, he fell to a distant third behind Paes and Romário with twelve percent of voter intentions.
